Health & Safety.

An accident is something you don’t see coming

Otherwise it wouldn’t be an accident of course. That’s why hazard identification, training, and education are central to our health and safety policy, and fundamental to our ongoing success. If you can see where things might go wrong, they are less likely to happen.

Each work site presents its own particular set of hazards. So we write a corresponding set of health and safety plans specifically for each project. We also ensure that all site safety infrastructure and equipment (protective gear, scaffolding, safety harnesses, access ways and evacuation routes) is suitable and fully compliant.

Through our training, we place great emphasis on personal responsibility. We expect our people to make safety issues the first priority, and follow site-specific safety protocol. In this way, we have been able to eliminate many of the common work site accidents related to human error.

Base Civil has met the secondary level requirements for ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices. All staff hold ‘Site Safe’ passports and have First Aid training.

Quality Assurance

Everyone talks about quality, but what does it really mean?

To us quality is a discipline. It’s a way of approaching our work and business relationships as if every single thing we do matters – which of course it really does.

And when you expect excellence, a surprising thing happens – you often get it. Our sub-contractors and suppliers are consequently required to meet the same high standards we set for ourselves – they know that they are going to do their best work with us.

So how is this quality measured?

We provide quality assurance through our Telarc-registered Quality Management System (QMS) and hold ISO9001:2008 certification, an internationally recognised benchmark for performance. View our ISO9001:2008 Certificate here.

No matter how good you are, you can always be better.

So although we have a strong baseline expertise and robust quality control systems, we are constantly looking to improve. Much of this involves training and education programmes that keep our management and staff up to date with emerging technologies and constantly evolving industry requirements.

Environmental Management

Building infrastructure sustainably

As a New Zealand owned company, we take our responsibilities to the environment we all share very seriously.

Although by nature civil engineering projects can sometimes look unsightly, you can be assured that we take great precautions to protect the surrounding land, air and waterways, re-using or recycling materials where possible to minimise our footprint.

Some of the steps we take to manage our environment include:

  • Erosion and sediment control plans (ESCP) approved by regional councils.
  • Protection of catch-pits and waterways on smaller projects where ESCP is not officially required.
  • Regular environmental internal audits
  • No on-site fuel storage. A tanker comes to the site.
  • Careful material management to minimise waste to landfill
  • Waste oil recycling. Oil filters and other consumables from our workshop are correctly disposed of at an approved facility.
  • Specialised wash bay, with all site runoff screened to remove oil and grit.
  • Recycling stations for all paper, glass and plastic.
  • Environmental emergency training. Management and key staff have completed regional council training.
  • A documented record of all environmental information, including incidents and potential hazards.

Base Civil has been presented an award by the Waikato Regional Council for their environmentally sensitive earthworks. Read the article in the Coast & Country News September 2014. View the certificate here.

Traffic Management

Keeping things moving

A detailed traffic management plan (TMP) is a vital component, not just for major roading projects, but also for inner city landscaping and any other site which affects private and public transportation. In the latter case, traffic management and public relations work hand in hand to manage expectations and keep all stakeholders informed.

TMPs are approved by the appropriate authorities before work commences, so although some motorists may experience minor delays, your civil engineering project won’t.

We’ll assign a dedicated traffic manager who will be responsible for TMP compliance during the contract period. Our first priority is to ensure workplace safety. We seek to achieve this with minimal disruption for motorists.

Our staff are trained to a minimum of STMS Level 1: Temporary Traffic Management in accordance with the Transit New Zealand Code of Practice and Temporary Traffic Management. STMS level 2 and above is outsourced.

Management Of Projects

Communication is the key to success

We take a partnership approach where client contribution is vital to a successful outcome. We seek a global view of each project to fully understand what is expected by all stakeholders. In a word: communication.

Communication is the key to success. At the project’s inception, and throughout the construction phase through to completion. All key staff are issued with 4G smart phones so they can be reached – and respond – by voice, SMS or email, wherever they are. For complete peace of mind, there will always be an emergency contact available to you 24 hours, 7 days a week.

While technology clearly has its place, we encourage as much face to face time as possible with our clients, be they engineers, architects or key personnel within local authorities. Being able to eyeball a person and shake their hand goes a long way towards building a strong relationships based on trust.

Managers can see the performance of every project on a daily basis, thanks to a comprehensive accounting package with detailed job costing.  This enables us to eliminate time overruns and cost blow outs. Project managers hold weekly meetings to ensure all targets are being achieved.
