Our Completed Projects

Huntly and Ngaruawahia Wavebands

Client:  Waikato District Council
Location:
Huntly and Ngaruawahia WWTP's
Original Contract Period:
12 Weeks
Actual Construction period:
6 Weeks

Work completed under this contract included:

  • WWTP Rip Rap Erosion Protection

Base Civil has recently completed upgrades to the Huntly and Ngaruawahia Waste Water Treatment Plants for Waikato District Council. Both WWTP’s required removal and reparation of the existing waveband perimeter as wave action from the ponds had eroded the existing protection.

The ponds remained fully operational throughout the contract so it was important that operations ran smoothly to reduce stirring up the ponds and anything falling into the undesirable drink. Specific Health and Safety plans were put in place to address the difficult working environment. Very strict hygiene practices were implemented as well as a life buoy available which was not required.

The contract involved importing over 6000t of rip rap aggregate and carefully placing it around the perimeter of the ponds to provide erosion protection. Tracked marookas were used to cart the rip rap where access was limited. We strategically placed over 1000m of rip rap protection at the Ngaruawahia plant and over 1500m at the Huntly plant.

Although the job had some difficult restraints, we managed to complete both jobs within half the given contract timeframe.

The Civil works involves shifting approx 50,000m3 of earth to create the shelves for camp zones, almost 1km of water reticulation network, over 500m of wastewater network including manholes and pump station, road widening and entrance upgrade for the entry to the site, carpark construction and the construction of earth amphitheatres.

All this needs to be completed along with extensive environmental controls to ensure no sediment leaves the site.

The project was completed quickly even with design changes and a delayed start to ensure the work areas were handed over to builders on time.

Te Rahu Road, Subdivision, Stage 1

Client: Kauri Ridge Developements
Location:
Te Rahu Road, Te Awamutu
Original Contract Period:
12 Weeks
Actual Construction period:
15 Weeks

Work completed under this contract included:

  • Earthworks
  • Stormwater, Wastewater, Water Reticulation
  • Kerb and Channel
  • Pavement Construction
  • Chipseal and Asphalt Surfacing
  • Concrete Footpaths and Driveways
We undertook stage 1 of a 34 lot subdivision for Kauri Ridge Developments. Stage 1 involved earthworks for both stages of the 34 lot subdivision, road widening along the length of Te Rahu Road, an 11m wide carriageway construction, two concrete ROWs and service installation to 17 lots.

The earthworks involved shifting over 15,000m3 of soil over stage 1 and 2 to shape the main carriageway and shape various sections. This was a difficult process due to the poor strength of the existing soil, large fill volumes needed and precise specifications needed to be achieved on the fill. We worked with the engineer and client to come up with a cost effective solution enabling us to utilise the existing soil.

We installed 27 manholes and over 900m of sewer and stormwater pipelines along with over 450m of water reticulation including valves, hydrants and connecting into the council main. This was all connected to service the 17 lot subdivision along with power and ultra fast fibre.

The whole length of Te Rahu Road was widened along with the construction of Te Aranui Drive (The Big Pathway). The title very fitting considering the 11m wide carriageway. This included over 500m of kerb and channel and over 550m2 of concrete footpath to give the subdivision a nice urban finish.

The tight contract timeframe was extended due to additional work. The client was left very pleased with the final product, productive work rate and contract being under budget even with the additional works.

We carried out 1 meter widening either side of the 1.165 km ring road, to allow efficient movement of two way traffic as well as provide a safer environment for runners/cyclists.

The works involved relocation of existing farm fence to provide space for the road widening.  All topsoil was excavated from shoulders, backfilled and compacted with sand and GAP40.

The area between the tie in line and edge of seal was milled to provide a more consistent crossfall along the road. Once prepped to finish level the widened area was chipsealed.

Lastly the road was marked with an edge line as well as running/cycling symbols to delineate this lane safely away from the motorist lane.

3 x 50,000L fuel tanks were installed to service the fuel pumps.

We constructed the foundations for the shop, shop canopy, and carwash. The poor soil strength of the existing soil meant that foundations needed to be undercut and backfilled with imported sand. We also completed the pavement preparation and pouring of over 1200m2 of concrete forecourt and slabs.

The project required a lot of detailed management and design refinements along the way which were integrated into the work program while losing little time.  This ensured the client was happy with the outcome and the service station was open on time.

Drainage extended over 500m with new manholes lines up to 450mm diameter out to a new gully outlet.

The roading upgrade had to be completed in a sensitive environment as adjacent areas were still holding services throughout the works. Our crews shutdown and had smoko breaks to ensure cemetery users were not inconvenienced by noise or activities during those times.

During initial digout work it was identified that the top pavement layer from a previous overlay was failing meaning the entire top basecourse layer needed to be removed and replaced. Base Civil Limited came up new smart solutions, completed a full survey and long section design, scheduled new quantities and carried out the work which was not extensively more expensive than the tendered price but a far superior solution with more works. This was all completed short of the contract period and sealed before the Christmas break which was an excellent outcome of all parties and road users.

This was a challenging contract which very poor weather made more difficult. The street was very steep and involved over 250m of stormwater lines (300 & 375mm), manholes etc at over 2.0m deep. The road then required kerbing to be installed on both sides, footpaths, large entranceways due to set back boundaries then full pavement and surfacing. There were many old and hidden services which required relocation and property drainage connections which needed to be hooked into the network.  The job was under designed and therefore the tender budget was exceeded by some $80,000 but residents on the street all commented about the quality, the excellent staff and communication and superb outcome.
